Higher Road

HIGHER ROAD

LIVING BY THE RIVER IT CAN TAKE A TOLL
PARTICULARLY WHEN THE WATER OVERFLOWS
BETTER GET A MOVE ON BEFORE MY SOLES GET WET

THINKING BOUT A SHAKE UP OF THE STATUS QUO
DON’T KNOW WHERE I’M GOING BUT I GOT TO GO
AND TAKING THE BEST SHOT TO NEVER HARBOR REGRET

THAT’S WHY I’M LOOKING AROUND FOR A HIGHER ROAD
HOPE IT LIVES UP TO THE THINGS I WAS TOLD
EVEN IF IT ISN’T PAVED WITH GOLD IT MIGHT
BRING SOME PEACE OF MIND

LIVING IN THE VALLEY IT CAN DRAG YA DOWN
PARTICULARLY IN A COUPLE LOWLAND TOWNS
BETTER GET A MOVE ON TO MAKE UP WASTED TIME

AND NOW I’M LOOKING AROUND FOR A HIGHER ROAD
HOPE IT LIVES UP TO THE THINGS I WAS SOLD
EVEN IF IT DOESN’T LIGHTEN THE LOAD IT MIGHT
BRING SOME PEACE OF MIND

ON A HIGHER ROAD, NOT A BETTER PLACE
THAT YOU CAN FIND YOURSELF ON ANY DAY
ON A HIGHER ROAD, IT’S THE KIND OF SPACE
TO FIND YOURSELF

  1. Nice job, Tom. I like a song like this with intelligent lyrics that support more than one level of interpretation.

I can also identify with once living along a brook that ended up being dammed by beavers and flooding, now living 160 ft. up a hill from the “new” brook across the road.

  2. Hey Peter,
Thank you for your comments and thoughts. I remember that beaver story…beavers always get the right of way since their near extinction in the early 1900s.
Hope to see you at Burgy’s soon?
    Tom

    1. Our Friday group will be at Burgy Brews this Friday, so I will see you there. I just shared a link to this latest cut with the group.

  3. Best song ever! Groove, vocals, mix, lyrics….oh yeah. Perfect timing. Shakin’ up the status quo. Wake up people! Love playing this through my 15” Harbingers. Great tune bro……

  4. Hey Carole,
One of the last songs written for the 14 tune CD. Based on where I thought a lot of songs were sitting, I wanted a lighter, up tempo number, and then at least one waltz (next post).
Glad it speaks to you in a few ways.
    Tom

  5. Mr. Tom
as usual about the song, not just to say that I love the song, but I do love this song it’s amazing to me sort of really truly tells his own story, particularly in this case!!! Grrrrrreat!

  6. Hey Mr. Joe,
Not sure exactly what you’re trying to say, but it seems clear you love the song, and that’s all the analysis we need. Dave thinks it’s his best mix and master, and I concur; it’s quite impactful.
As always, thank you for the kind words.
    Mr. Tom

  7. Love the song Tom. The lyrics are amazing! Wishing you all the best.

In case you don’t remember me I’m Tom Quinn’s sister.
